FIBA Europe Cup - Round of 32 Week 4 review

MUNICH, Germany (FIBA Europe Cup) - We take a look back at the fourth week of action in the FIBA Europe Cup Round of 32 which concluded on Thursday night and cleared up the landscape somewhat with regards to the qualification race.

Telenet Oostende (Group Q) and Fraport Skyliners (Group U) this week both claimed their fourth win in a row in this stage of the competition and have become the first two teams to secure a spot in the Round of 16, come what may in the final two gamedays of the Round Of 32. Elan Chalon (Group R) and Khimik Yuzhne (Group T) also surged to 4-0 this week but have not yet mathematically assured their passage to the Round of 16.

There are a further nine teams that took a big step this week as they improved to 3-1 in their respective groups' standings: ASVEL, Maccabi Rand Media (Group O), Port of Antwerp Giants, BK Ventspils (Group P), Türk Telekom Ankara (Group Q), STB Le Havre (Group S), Royal Hali Gaziantep (Group U), Openjobmetis Varese and Petrolina AEK Larnaca (Group V).

In stark contrast with these 13 teams above that either punched their ticket to the next stage or moved within one step of accomplishing that goal, four teams abolished all hope of making it to the next round after suffering their fourth defeat in as many games in the Round of 32: WKS Slask Wroclaw (Group Q), Tartu University Rock (Group R), Bakken Bears Aarhus (Group T) and Rosa Radom (Group U).

Making the headlines
Belfius Mons-Hainaut had every reason to feel good about their Tuesday trip to Lithuania as they were facing off with a team they had beaten 77-57 at home.

A victory against Juventus Utena, by any margin, combined with Khimik's win over Bakken Bears Aarhus, would secure Mons a top-two finish in Group T and a ticket to the Round of 16.

We had warned however in our preview that Juventus's poor offensive display in the first meeting three weeks ago was a mirage and was unlikely to be repeated on Tuesday.

The Lithuanian team went several steps further than that as they hit the century mark for the first time, in their best offensive performance of the season.

Juventus breezed past Mons 103-65 to wipe out the 20-point deficit from their Week 1 visit to the Belgian team and might have just turned the group situation on its head.

The Lithuanian team now hold their fate in their own hands in the race for qualification while Mons have to do one better than both Juventus and Khimik in the final standings in order to advance.

Stat of the week
Quantez Robertson drilled all five of his three-point attempts in Fraport Skyliners' 95-81 win at Södertälje Kings on Wednesday to tie the FIBA Europe Cup record for most made triples in a single game.

His excellent shooting display helped the Skyliners finish on 9-of-14 (64.3%) from downtown, which is the second-best mark after Türk Telekom Ankara's 16-of-24 (66.7%) in a win over KTP back in November.

Interestingly, neither of these two teams is in the top-three of the competition in average three-point field-goal percentage, a category which is led by ASVEL (46.8%) with Maccabi Rand Media (43.8%) and Varese (43.6%) in second and third place, respectively.

This is not to say that Skyliners' shooting display this week could not mark the beginning of a new trend that could eventually see them top the charts.

Proof of that is AEK Larnaca, which up until two weeks ago were not even a run-of-the-mill team in steals, averaging only 6.6 per game.

But on Wednesday, a week after coming up with a season-high 15 steals against Tsmoki Minsk, the Cypriot side repeated the feat against magnofit Güssing Knights, whom they dispossessed of the ball 15 times to earn a valuable 68-59 victory.

Performances of the week
Delroy James came up with the most impressive display in a tight game this week, as he collected 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and five drawn fouls to power Enisey to a crucial 94-91 win over Foxtown Cantu at home in Group R.

Two more players showed admirable poise in crunch time to tip the balance in favour of their respective teams.

The thrilling Group Q game between Boras Basket and Telenet Oostende featured 15 lead changes and 16 ties but Dusan Djordjevic stayed cool as ice and converted 6-of-6 free-throws in the clutch.

He finished with 16 points, five rebounds, seven assists and one steal to help the Belgian team grab an 89-86 win that sealed their passage to the Round of 16.

Meanwhile Le Havre entered the final quarter of their Group S encounter with Pieno Zvaigzdes in Lithuania trailing by 14 points.

The battle-hardened veteran Willie Deane however poured in 15 of his game-high 23 points in the last stretch to instigate an 87-82 comeback win for the French team.

Deane, who was 7-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, also added two rebounds, four assists and one steal.
