FIBA commemorates 85th anniversary with gala dinner in city where it was founded

GENEVA - A congregation of FIBA's stakeholders from around the globe came together in Geneva on Friday night to celebrate world basketball's governing body's 85th birthday.

Representatives from FIBA's headquarters, its regional offices and national member federations along with distinguished guests - including the inductees making up the 2017 Class of the FIBA Hall of Fame and FIBA Secretary General Emeritus Borislav Stankovic - gathered for an official gala dinner."

FIBA President Horacio Muratore said: "It was here, in Geneva itself, on June 18, 1932, that a group of eight founding members came together with the objective of creating basketball's world governing body. It has been a long road since but today we can proudly look back on that time and say that basketball stands as one of the key pillars of the Olympic movement. It is a truly global sport that enjoys a huge popularity."

FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member Patrick Baumann said: "It is a great honor to be here to celebrate FIBA's 85th anniversary and pay tribute to those that laid the foundation of our great organization. International basketball was only able to grow with a strong and united leadership that embraced all stakeholders of the movement under one roof. 2017 sees the beginning of a new era for basketball and we count on you all to make our ambitious objectives become reality."
