Vargas hails team unity of Venezuela

CARACAS (2016 Rio Olympics) - For several years, Gregory Vargas linked up with Venezuela's national team in the hope that he would experience something special.

In 2015, he and his teammates most certainly did.

After taking their lumps during a difficult preparation campaign, including a one-win, three-defeat showing at the Pan American Games, Venezuela got the reward for their hard work and unwavering belief in coach Nestor 'Che' Garcia and his tactics when they travelled to Mexico City for the FIBA Americas Championship.

On 11 September, the Venezuelans surprised Canada, 79-78, in the Semi-Finals to clinch a spot in Rio de Janeiro Games.

Vargas had 9 points and 5 rebounds in the contest, with his most important contribution coming at the end.

The 29-year-old drew a foul while attempting to get into position for an offensive rebound and made the first of two free throws to give Venezuela the victory.

The following day, Vargas and Co capped a stirring performance at the tournament with a 76-71 triumph over Argentina in the Final.

Vargas had 9 points and 7 rebounds in that success as Venezuela became continental champions for the first time.

"We went to Mexico City thinking about the [FIBA] Olympic Qualifying Tournament and competing with the other European teams," Vargas said.

"But thanks to God and the hard work put in by the team, the great success of 2015 is ours.

"The key was the unity of the team and the chemistry, and Nestor Garcia telling us that we could play against whichever team of whichever country, and that gave us confidence to get the triumph."

So instead of having to do what Venezuela did three years ago and compete in a FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, la vinotinto coaches, players and federation can bask in the glory of their magnificent achievement and get ready for what is sure to be one of the greatest experiences of their lives.

They can think about becoming Olympians.
