The winter holidays didn't stop basketball from developing in St. Lucia

CASTRIES — The St. Lucia Basketball Academy, in association with the St. Lucia Basketball Federation (SLBF), decided to keep basketball alive during the winter holidays with their Basketball Christmas Camp.

Throughout December 17 to the 28th, girls and boys from primary and secondary school (5-18 years of age) participated in fun and exciting activities to acquire and develop their basketball skills. They also had the chance to learn about the value of team work and effort, make new friends and create unforgettable memories.

The purpose of the camp was to provide an alternative for these children so that they not only learn basketball, but also about the importance of sport in general and physical activity. It also provided an opportunity for structured play during the winter, so that the participants could stay active and healthy.

“For some time now, the St. Lucia Federation have wanted mini and youth basketball in the island to grow,” said the Federation’s Secretary General. “The camp is taking place because there's a need to involve girls and boys in the sport.

We would like to expand the camp from 2019 on until it reaches a point where it can take place around the whole island so that the Federation has a complete program for youth development. We have several clubs around the island, but their focus hadn't been mini or youth basketball. Starting this year two of our clubs have been working with children and have decided to create the camp,” he added.

The island of St. Lucia is in the Eastern Caribbean, its area spans approximately 617 square kilometers and its population is 180,000.
