Spain great Reyes retires from international basketball

MADRID - Another member of Spain's golden generation, Felipe Reyes, has retired from international basketball.

A FIBA Basketball World Cup winner in 2006 and three-time FIBA EuroBasket champion (2009, 2011 and 2015), the 37-year-old has decided to focus exclusively on his time with Real Madrid.

Other golden generation members to leave in recent times were Jose Calderon, who played his final games for Spain at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and Juan Carlos Navarro, the FIBA EuroBasket 2011 MVP who wore the national team shirt for the last time at FIBA EuroBasket 2017 in Istanbul.

"I HAVE ARRIVED AT THE MOMENT TO LEAVE 'THE FAMILY' ON THE COURT, BUT NOT IN THE HEART. THEY HAVE BEEN 16 YEARS OF UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES WITH FRIENDS FOREVER." ReyesReyes

Reyes decided to make his announcement on social media.

He tweeted on Monday afternoon: "I have arrived at the moment to leave 'The Family' on the court, but not in the heart. They have been 16 years of unforgettable experiences with friends forever. Because of that, precisely, it has been the success of our Spanish national team: a group of friends that respects each other and fights for one aim: they laugh when together and leave the skin (on the court) at each training, each game. What better dream is there to enjoy from basketball than with these people? I have shared in it, so I will tell those who ask me what is special about this team."

In his tweet, Reyes also thanked the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), as well as Real Madrid and Estudiantes "for their competitiveness and demands," that carried him into the national team.

Reyes, whose older brother Alfonso also wore his country's colors, first made headlines as a member of the young and exciting Spain side that won the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Portugal back in 1999.

Berni Rodriguez, Carlos Cabezas, Navarro, Raul Lopez and Paul Gasol were all members of that side that went on to win titles with the senior teams that Reyes also played for.

Reyes reached the top of the EuroBasket podium for the third time in 2015

In addition to being a vital player over the years at World Cups and EuroBaskets, Reyes also played at four Olympics, claiming silver after thrilling Finals against the United States in 2008 and 2012, and a bronze following a one-point triumph over Australia in 2016.

In the 2004 Olympic team, Reyes played big minutes for a Spain side that went unbeaten in the Preliminary Round but fell in a 102-94 Quarter-Final upset to the USA.
