Showalter kept on in search of another FIBA Americas U16 title

COLORADO SPRINGS (FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2017) - Don Showalter will get a chance to defend his four straight titles at the FIBA U16 Americas Championship this summer as he was kept on as USA Basketball's cadet head coach for another cycle.

USA Basketball's Men's Developmental National Team Committee selected Showalter as head coach for the U16 continental tournament, which will be 14-18 June in Argentina, while naming Scott Fitch and Stan Waterman as his assistants. USA Basketball’s Board of Directors approved the staff.

"I am looking forward to organising a team comprised of the top U16 players in the country," Showalter said. "It is a challenge to take the top, young players and instil the USA Basketball culture of teamwork, defense and unselfish play. The FIBA U16 Americas Championship will be extremely competitive. To represent USA Basketball in international competition is the highest honor for any coach and I look forward to the challenge."

Showalter and his staff will hold a training camp to determine the 12-man roster from 1-10 June at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Showalter has served as the American U16 and U17 teams since the first FIBA U16 Americas Championship in 2009. The coach has guided the USA to eight straight titles - four U16 continental championships and four FIBA U17 Basketball World Cups - with a perfect 50-0 record.

The top four teams from the FIBA U16 Americas Championship will qualify for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2018.

The other seven teams to compete at the tournament in Argentina - the host city to be still announced - are Canada from North America; Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Mexico from Centrobasket U15 Championship 2016; and Argentina, Paraguay and Venezuela from South American U15 Championship 2016.
