2023 Class of FIBA Hall of Fame: Ângelo Victoriano


MIES (Switzerland) - When one reflects on the history of Angola's national team, the name Ângelo Monteiro dos Santos Victoriano figures prominently. Victoriano is being inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

A 1.96m (6ft 5in) small forward, born in Luanda in 1968, Victoriano discovered basketball as a young teen and blossomed into one of the country's finest-ever players.

Eight times in his career, Victoriano reached the top of the podium at the FIBA AfroBasket, while on the global stage, he featured at four Olympic Games and three FIBA Basketball World Cups.

Renowned for his toughness and ability to play multiple positions in the front court, Victoriano was fearless.

Reliable, hard-working, and inspirational, his voice could always be heard in the locker room in the difficult moments of seasons or tournaments, helping teammates navigate hard times and maintain their focus..l

Though Angola lost, Victoriano played against the USA's Dream Team in their first competitive game, at the 1992 Olympics. That meant he competed against arguably the greatest national team ever assembled, one that included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and a host of other legendary figures in the sport. Victoriano also '0played in three FIBA Basketball World Cups in 1990, 1994, and 2002.

In his famous club career, the legend suited up for Petro Atletico (1982-1992), Queluz (1992-1993), Barreirense (1993-1995), Petro Atletico (1995-1996), ASA (1996-1997) and Primeiro de Agosto (1997-2006).

He is a 10-time Angolan League champion, eight-time Angolan Cup winner, eight-time Angolan Super Cup winner, two-time African Clubs Cup winner, and Portuguese II Division League champion in 1993.

He is being enshrined in the Class of 2023 that includes Penny Taylor (Australia), Yuko Oga (Japan), Katrina McClain (USA), Amaya Valdemoro (Spain), Wlamir Marques (Brazil), Yao Ming (China), Liem Tjien Siong / Sonny Hendrawan (Indonesia); with both Carlos Loyzaga (Philippines) and Zurab Sakandelidze (Georgia) being inducted posthumously.  The Class also includes deserved recognition for coaching duo Valerie Garnier (France) and Alessandro Gamba (Italy).

The 2023 FIBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place  after the conclusion of the FIBA Congress on 23 August 2023, in Manila, Philippines, ahead of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
