Tahiti basketball back on track

Papeete (Tahiti) - Tahiti basketball is back in full swing with the Tahiti Basketball Federation organizing several tournaments for various age brackets in the past few weeks.

National Basketball Development Officier Ariiramru, shared the process of returning to the basketball courts after a government-mandated lockdown due to the Covid-19 crisis.

"We followed the rules and suspended play but resumed our plans immediately when the government lifted the lockout. The President and High Commissioner announced the decision on television, then a notice was published to make it official," said Meuel.

Meuel shared that the competition did not resume immediately with officials giving ample time for teams to prepare for the resumption of the season.

"The Federation gave approximately 3 weeks of practice, conditioning to the teams before to restart the season," Meuel said, who is also the captain of Tahiti's national team.

"We started with youth leagues first to finish quickly because summer break is coming shortly," he added.

With the current season ending in a few weeks, the Tahiti Basketball Federation has its eye on the next season already with preparation ongoing according to Meuel.

"The plan for the Federation in the next few weeks is to finish the season, but we are already developing a plan for the next season. It's important we keep our momentum in order to continue to grow the game in the country," Meuel said.
