Hosts Indonesia win grudge match over Thailand as Chinese Taipei, China, Unified Korea get victories

JAKARTA (Asian Games 2018) – Indonesia and Chinese Taipei claimed wins In the Asian Games 2018 Men’s 5x5 Basketball tournament while China and Unified Korea got their victories in the Women’s 5x5 tournament.

Unified Korea made quick work of India and rushed out to a 49-22 lead at halftime. They cruised on for the rest of the way towards a 104-54 win. Unified Korea managed to balance minutes among all their players, leading to five players scoring in double-digits led by Kang Leeseul who had 17 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Unified Korea are now tied for second place in Group A with 2 wins and 1 loss with Kazakhstan and the two will play on August 21.

China were relentless against Mongolia and even after leading 83-33 in the third quarter. They finished the game with a 27-3 closing act to wrap up a 110-36 win. Everyone got on the scoreboard for China with Li Yueru topping all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds. China clinches the top seed in Group B with this win.

One the men’s side, Chinese Taipei shutdown Hong Kong with a 98-67 win. Chinese Taipei lit it up for 13 three-pointers on 46% shooting, leaving Hong Kong behind for the loss. Liu Cheng had a big game with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

 

Indonesia played Thailand in the most intense game of the day where neither team backed down for a single minute. Thailand jumped out to 24-15 lead midway in the first quarter with 4/4 three-point shooting, but Indonesia rode their home crowd energy to get back into the game. Indonesia’s mix of physicality and precise shooting created a moderate lead over Thailand for most of the way up until the 4th quarter when Tawatchai Suktub’s 5 straight points got the game tied up once again.

However, Indonesia were able to rally and run away for the 98-86 win behind Xaverius Prawiro’s two clutch three-pointers. Prawiro had 18 points to couple with Jamar Johnson’s massive 28-point, 16-rebound game. They were glad to have been able to overcome Nakorn Jaisanuk’s 28 points and 5 three-pointers.
