Living up to expectations can be difficult, especially when you are expected to follow in the footsteps of Lindsay Gaze, who represented Australia as a player in three Olympic Games and coached the Boomers in four. But Andrew’s exceptional career made the Gaze name a mark of true basketball pedigree.

Top scorer for 14 NBL seasons, he excelled on the big stage for club and for country, gaining the right to use the term legend in his own merit.

He was named NBL Rookie of the Year as an 18-year-old playing for the Melbourne Tigers under the guidance of his father Lindsay.

In 1989, Gaze went stateside and played college basketball for Seton Hall, reaching the NCAA tournament championship game where they lost to Michigan in overtime.

Gaze made a small number of appearances in the NBA, during the 1993-1994 season with the Washington Bullets and during the 1998-1999 season with the San Antonio Spurs.

Holding endless records in the NBL where he spent 22 seasons, Gaze scored a mind-blowing 18,908 points averaging 30.9 per game, was voted MVP seven times.

For Australia his record is equally as impressive. Participating in five Olympics Games (1984, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000), and four Wold Championships (1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998), guiding the Boomers to their best finishes in recent times, including three fourth place finished in the Olympic Games.

During his last game for Australia at the Sydney Olympics – a defeat to Lithuania in the bronze medal game – Gaze, aged 35, played more minutes than any other player, scored 22 points, secured 3 rebounds and made 3 assists.

In spite of retiring from international competition, he would go on to play professionally for five more seasons, before retiring fully in 2005.

His talent and feel for the game, his numerous records in the national and international game, his longevity and his exuberant personality have ensured his status as the greatest player ever to wear the famous Boomers yellow and green.
