Hernangomez's star takes off

SEVILLE (Eurocup/Liga Endesa) - There have been some doubts as to whether or not Spain will have the necessary firepower on the frontline to remain an elite nation team once Pau Gasol and his brother Marc are no longer part of the program.

While both are expected to continue playing for their country, there is another big man on the basketball scene in the country who should remove at least some of the anxiety.

His name is Guillermo "Willy" Hernangomez of Baloncesto Seville and in the past week, he has underlined his immense potential with a couple of spectacular games.

In the Eurocup, the 20-year-old had 21 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and a couple of blocks to lead Seville past Virtus Rome, and after he was named Player of the Week in the competition.

Just days later, on Sunday, Hernangomez had the best game of his career against powerhouses FC Barcelona in the Spanish Liga Endesa.

Barca, who have yet to lose in any of their eight Turkish Airlines Euroleague games, caved in against Hernangomez who finished with 29 points, 13 boards, two steals and a block.

He made 11 of his 16 shots from the floor and seven of nine attempts at the free-throw line.

Hernangomez was among three players invited to train with Spain this summer before they competed at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

While he didn't play in the tournament, he did make a positive impression on everyone, including Pau Gasol.

When the Chicago Bulls star discovered what Hernangomez had done against his former team, Barcelona, he congratulated him.

Hernangomez, whose mother and father both played basketball, is well known in Spain but his performances of late are making everyone sit up and take notice.

This past summer, he played for Spain at the U20 European Championship and it's a good bet that come next summer, he'll be with the senior team when it travels to the EuroBasket.

It's easy to see that he is enjoying the moment with Seville because after wins, he and his teammates play music and dance.

All eyes will be on Hernangomez on Wednesday when he leads his team against against SLUC Nancy in a vital Eurocup game.
