USA - Army women's basketball coach Dixon dies at 28

VALHALLA (NCAA) - Army women's basketball coach Maggie Dixon died Thursday night after suffering an arrhythmic episode to her heart. She was 28.

Dixon collapsed Wednesday afternoon at the home of a friend near the West Point, New York campus and was rushed to Keller Army Community Hospital.  She was then airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.

Westchester County medical examiner spokesman Jim O'Connell confirmed Dixon's death on Friday.

Dixon, the sister of Pittsburgh men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon, guided the Lady Knights to a 20-11 record and their first NCAA Tournament appearance in her first season as coach.

"From the time Maggie arrived here, her enthusiastic 'no limits' approach earned her the respect and love of everyone," West Point superintendent Lt. Gen. William J Lennox Jr.

"She consistently displayed great leadership and served as an outstanding role model for those both on and off her team. She was a leader of character with a commitment to excellence who set the example in all she did."

The Cadets carried Dixon on their shoulders as they celebrated their first Patriot League championship this season en route to the NCAA Tournament.

"Coach Dixon made us love the game even more and we played our hearts out every single time we stepped on the court," Army guard Cara Enright said. "She showed us how to be winners on the field and off."
