Luke back to future

WHEN Luke Schenscher left Calvary Lutheran Primary School in 1994 his goal was clear.

"I want to be a famous basketball player," he wrote in the Year 7 commemorative book.

And yesterday, the Chicago Bulls stringbean returned to where it all began at Morphett Vale, mission completed.

After managing to get his break playing for the Bulls in the NBA playoffs earlier this month, Schenscher reacquainted himself with his old surroundings.

"I remember it being a little bit bigger for some reason, I don't know why," the 213cm giant said with a laugh. "It's definitely weird. I was here for eight years growing up but it's a lot different to what I remember. It's fun to get back and see the place again."

Despite being blessed with height, nothing has come easily for Schenscher and it was this message he conveyed to the budding basketball stars hanging from his every word.

"The way things have worked out, I've never done anything easy or got given anything," Schenscher, 23, said. "I just stuck at it. I knew I wanted to play basketball professionally and the NBA was my goal. I just didn't stop until I got there."

The ardent Crows fan is also more than happy to act as an inspiration.

"I remember when I was here, a couple of football players including Tony Modra came to the school," he recalled. "I always remember that and looked up to people like that. Hopefully I can do the same thing for these kids."

Through the internet, Schenscher has kept in touch with the progress of his Crows and his favourite SANFL team, Glenelg.

With everything he needs in the United States, the only difficulty upon his return was driving.

"Since I've been back I've had to drive on the left-hand side of the road and that's the hardest thing," Schenscher said.

"I had some Vegemite when I was over there so I got my fix and I found Coopers (beer) too."

Schenscher will return to the US next week, where he hopes to secure another contract with the Bulls and resume his battle with Miami Heat star Shaquille O'Neal.

"I always said as long as he didn't dunk on me, I did a good job against him and he never did," Schenscher said of his confrontation against 147kg O'Neal in the playoffs. "It was a great experience to play against probably the best centre to play in the NBA."
