Regatas, Halcones Rojos advance

CORRIENTES (FIBA Americas League) - Argentina are going to have plenty of youngsters that will soon break into the national team as a new era of basketball is launched under coach Sergio Hernandez.

Nicolas Brussino, 21, of Regatas Corrientes is among the players to keep an eye on.

The sharpshooting forward, who had eight points in the 63-57 victory over Marinos de Anzoategui on the opening night of FIBA Americas League Group C on Friday, poured in a game-high 17 on Saturday to fire Regatas to an 89-70 triumph over Paulistano.

The victories sealed a place for Regatas in the Semi-Final Round.

Saturday's win also ensured that Halcones Rojos of Mexico advanced from the pool.

Halcones had edged Paulistano, 89-84, on Friday and then won Saturday's first game against Venezuelans Marinos, 91-76.

On Sunday, Brussino was at it again for Regatas in the battle for first place.

He connected on three of his six attempts from the arc and had 16 points as Regatas defeated Halcones, 70-56.

That setback won't bother Halcones much because their main aim had been to claim a top-two place in order to progress to the Semi-Final Round.

In Halcones' first win over Paulistano, Puerto Rico's David Huertas had 18 points and Francisco Cruz, a member of Mexico's FIBA Basketball World Cup squad, had 17.

Cruz, the Halcones captain, had 15 points in Saturday's win over Marinos.

Two-time champions Penarol of Argentina and Sao Jose dos Campos of Brazil progressed from Group A to the Semi-Final Round while from Group B, Flamengo and Pioneros de Quintana Roo progressed.

This coming weekend, Patriotas de Boyaca, Capitanes de Arecibo, Bauru and Trotamundos will play in Group D with the top two sides moving into the next round.

Brazilians Bauru lifted the Liga Sudamericana title at the end of November.

Meanwhile, the coach of Regatas, Nicolas Casalanguida, has just been confirmed as one of the assistant coaches for Argentina's national team.

Casalanguida assisted Julio Lamas at last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup.
