Canada, Brazil, USA and Mexico off to winning starts at FIBA Americas U16 Women

PUEBLA (2015 FIBA Americas U16 Women's Championship) - The FIBA Americas U16 Women's Championship tipped off on Wednesday in Puebla, Mexico, with Canada, Brazil, defending champions United States and hosts Mexico all coming away with wins.

First out on the court were the Canadians and Cubans. The team coached by Carly Clarke needed time to establish their game rhythm but once they did they took advantage on the scoreboard.

The Canadian lead increased thanks to a good performance at both ends of the court and the offensive weaponry of Alyssa Jerome who added 16 points. Canada took the victory 85-43.

Brazil, making their debut in the event, dominated Venezuela from the initial jump to the last buzzer for an 84-40 win.

Anne Sabatini's side dominated across the board, holding a clear dominance in the paint where they scored 58 points. Izabela Leite had 18 points to lead the way in the winning cause.

The USA opened their title defence against Argentina and, after a fairly even start, they pulled away to take a 38-19 halftime lead. But, with Andra Espinoza-Hunter and Alexis Morris making their presence felt down low - on their way to 16-point performances -  Dori Oldaker's team dominated inside and went on to win 80-48

The hosts of the Championship made their triumphant debut in the event with a 74-45 win over Honduras. The teams were evenly matched during the first half, but the third quarter proved pivotval as the Mexicans took over.

Mexico's Maria Ruiz hit four three-pointers on her way to a game-high 24 points.
