Bauru, Uniceub progress; OT defeat costly for Defensor

BAURU (Liga Sudamericana) - Bauru defeated two-time champions Uniceub on Thursday night to finish top of Group D in the Liga Sudamericana but both teams advanced to the Semi-Final Round.

The two clubs ended up first and second, respectively, ahead of Defensor Sporting of Uruguay and Guerreros de Bogota.

Defensor would have clinched second place with a victory over Guerreros in Thursday's first game but lost 89-83 after overtime.

Thursday's outcomes left Uniceub, Defensor and Guerreros with 1-2 records, and a points-differential tie-breaker allowed Uniceub to finish second and advance to the next stage of the competition.

In the games between the three sides, Uniceub ended up with a +12 differential, better than Defensor's +2 and Guerreros' -14.

Defensor Sporting had their chances to stay alive in the competition. They were on top 68-66 when Emiro Romero dunked for Guerreros to knot the game with 59 seconds remaining.

Both sides missed opportunities to win in regulation and the game went to the extra period.

With 3:36 to go in overtime, Romero buried a three-pointer for a 75-72 lead and his team never trailed again.

Luis Bethelmy led a balanced scoring attack for Guerreros with 19 points.

Robert Day had 20 points for Bauru as they defeated Uniceub in the second game, 88-78, to win for the third time. Alex Garcia added 14 points.

Malvin, Mogi Das Cruzes (both Group A), Comunikt, Boca Juniors (both Group B), Winner Limeira and Argentino de Junin (both Group C) had already progressed to the Semi-Final Round.
