USA - Kidd may stay involved with national team

DALLAS (Olympics) - Team USA has seen the last of Jason Kidd as a player, but the veteran Dallas Mavericks point guard may be involved in some other capacity.

United States coach Mike Krzyzewski showered praise on the 38-year-old Kidd, who won gold at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics and never lost a game.

Kidd decided his last run with the national team would be the Beijing Games four years ago.

"I talked with Coach K about maybe getting into the coaching end of it," Kidd said on Wednesday.

"I want to stay connected with them in some form."

Krzyzewski, when fielding questions about the 20 finalists for this summer's side at the London Games, was asked about Kidd.

"Jason is amazing," Krzyzewski said.

"He's an undefeated international player.

"One of the reasons we have a program right now is because of his leadership, his maturity. He's the best.

"I love Jason, and appreciate his commitment to USA Basketball over the years.

"But especially as we started to form the program (that we have) right now, he was an essential ingredient for the success we've had so far."

USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo also hailed the impact of Kidd, who last year won his first NBA title with Dallas.

"When we formed our club for the 2008 Olympics, Jason was the only gold medalist in the room," Colangelo said.

"And since that time, we now have 18 gold medalists - eight from the Olympic team and 10 from the (2010) World Championship team.

"But it all started with Jason."
