Cubillan fires Trotamundos into next round

TUNJA (DIRECTV Liga de las Americas FIBA) - David Cubillan figures to be an important player for Venezuela later this year (25 August-6 September) when they compete at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship in Monterrey, Mexico.

Right now, the 27-year-old shooting guard is proving to be a game-winner for Trotamundos in the DIRECTV Liga de las Americas.

Needing to prevail in their last game of Group D against Capitanes de Arecibo to advance to the Semi-Final Round of the competition, the Venezuelan outfit got 17 points from Cubillan and claimed a 66-61 victory.

That result, combined with an opening night triumph over hosts Patriotas de Boyaca, was enough for Trotamundos to seal their place in the next stage of the competition.

They progressed along with Liga Sudamericana winners Bauru of Brazil, a team that won all three games over the weekend.

Trotamundos had a dream start on Friday and won against Patriotas, 98-88, following a 30-point, 10-rebound effort from Robert Glenn.

Bauru, who defeated Capitanes 82-71 in their opener, then thumped Trotamundos on Day 2, 92-68.

Alex Garcia, one of Bauru's Brazil internationals who played at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, had a triple-double in that win over the Venezuelan team, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

With their destiny in their own hands, Trotamundos scraped a five-point triumph on Sunday with Cubillan leading the way.

They took the lead for good late in the third quarter although the victory was not assured until the final minute of the contest.

Bauru romped to a 110-61 triumph over Patriotas in the last game of Group D to remain unbeaten and finish first ahead of Trotamundos.
