Club Africain send reigning champs D'Agosto crashing at African Champions Cup

TUNIS (African Champions Cup) - Primeiro D'Agosto are out of the 2014 African Champions Cup (ACC) and won't defend their title following a 79-69 Quarter-Finals defeat to hosts Club Africain on Thursday in Tunis, Tunisia.

While factors such as the home fans' tireless support, a 36-23 rebounding advantage and Mohamed Hadidane's impressive defensive plays contributed to Club Africain's historic win, Marcus Haislip was clearly the difference maker for the hosts, who trailed 34-30 at halftime.

The USA-born forward - who turns 34 on 22 December and has had Euroleague and NBA stints - led all scorers with 25 points for Club Africain, who entered the tournament's second-round with a 2-2 record.

Haislip, who reportedly signed a month-long contract with the Tunisians, was unstoppable near basket, where he made 9 of his 18 field goals attempts.

D'Agosto, who counts with the services of seven Angolan internationals on its roster and has won eight ACC titles in the past 15 years, was far from its glory days on Thursday.

With the exception of Reggie Moore, who finished with a team-high 19 points before fouling out, no other Angolan international scored or rebounded in double-digits.

This was D'Agosto's second defeat to a Tunisian opposition in the tournament, after an 86-82 overtime defeat to Etoile Sportive Rades in Group B.

The win is a major boost for Tunisian aspirations at AfroBasket 2015 - which the country will host - considering their growing rivalry to their Angolan counterparts.

Hadidane, German-born Ziyed Chennoufi and Mohamed Dhifallah, a trio in the Tunisia's plans for next year’s African Championship, continue to impress and have put in solid performances in Tunis.

In the Semi-Finals, Club Africain will face Angolan side Recreativo do Libolo, who reached the last four, following an 82-49 triumph over AS Mazembe.

Early in the day, Tunisian ace Makram Ben Romdhane came up with game-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds to help Egyptian side Sporting Alexandria get past Union Sportive Monastir, 74-57, and set up a Friday Semi-Final clash with Etoile Sportive Rades (6-0), who trounced BC M’Tsapere 106-76.

In the qualification game for 9th-11th places, Malabo Kings beat Abidjan Basketball Club 'ABC' 86-74, adding more misery to a team, which has conceded its sixth defeat in as many games.

The Ivorian side will finish bottom of the 11-team tournament.
