Ingles, Motum come up just short of making NBA rosters

LOS ANGELES (NBA) - Joe Ingles and Brock Motum are very good players, something that was reconfirmed by their participation in the FIBA Basketball World Cup this summer with Australia.

The former has been a Boomer since 2008, when he first began representing his homeland at the Beijing Olympics, while the latter appeared in his first big event with Australia at the World Cup in Spain.

The two were less than a week away from making their NBA debuts before getting the unwanted news over the weekend that they had been let go by their respective teams.

The Los Angeles Clippers opted to keep Jared Cunningham on their 15-man roster and made Ingles, a 2.03m guard, their final cut.

Motum's bid to join fellow Australia international and prized rookie Dante Exum on the Utah Jazz roster came to an end when management opted to go with a 14-man squad instead of one with 15 players.

The 2.08m forward had signed as a free agent on 26 August while Ingles had penned a deal on 22 September with the Clippers.

Each has taken the setback in his stride.

The 27-year-old was also philosophical with his Instagram account, showing a photo of a typed message that read: "Keep your focus on the things you can actually control. Choosing to center on anything else will either stop you in your tracks or significantly slow you down."

Ingles was a Euroleague winner with Maccabi Tel Aviv last season. He averaged 11.3 points, 3.4 assists and 3.2 assists at the World Cup.

It seemed that Motum, meanwhile, had made the Utah squad when he was still on 15-man roster but the club decided not to keep him.

Motum was a feel-good story for Australian basketball this year.

Far from a sure thing to making the World Cup roster, he impressed coach Andrej Lemanis during the Sino/Australia Challenge and earned a spot in the squad that travelled to Spain finished third in Group D and reached the Round of 16 before falling to Turkey.

Motum, who turned 24 earlier this month, averaged 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game at Spain 2014.
