FIBA Europe Board takes decisions on FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023, approves Youth Championship hosts

PARIS (France) - The FIBA Europe Board, term of office 2019-2023, convened in Paris, France for its 20th meeting, on Monday, November 21, 2022.

FIΒΑ Europe President Turgay Demirel chaired the session, with FIBA President Hamane Niang, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and FIBA Executive Director Europe/FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak also in attendance.

For the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifiers, the Board approved a recommendation by the Competitions' Commission with regards to the qualification criteria:

  • Only the group winners from groups F and I qualify directly to the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023;
  • The four (4) best placed second teams out of the eight (8) remaining groups qualify to the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023.

This is a consequence of the decision to withdraw Russia and Belarus from the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifiers (groups F and I).

The Board also considered and approved the following:

  • A request by the co-hosts of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023, Slovenia and Israel, to each find and agree with a partner national federation for the event; those partner teams will compete in one of the groups organised by the host country, depending on the draw seeds;
  • An increase of contributions to the Youth European Championships hosts, participating youth teams and to game officials' fees as of the 2023-24 season;
  • The number of spots in the EuroCup Women allocated by way of country ranking of the National Federations;
  • The hosts of the 2023 Youth European Championships (click HERE to download).

In other matters, the Board was presented with the figures confirming the unprecedented success of FIBA EuroBasket 2022, ranking it among the top events ever in terms of digital delivery.

Mr. Zagklis presented a report on the equally successful delivery of FIBA Women's World Cup 2022 in Australia, which set a benchmark for a women's event organization and attendance.

Mr. Novak's report included updates on the FIBA Europe Coaching Department, the Erasmus+ projects "EuroStep" and "Empowerment of Female Coaches & Referees" and the Integrity Education & Prevention SPOC (Single Point of Contact) program.

The Board also heard reports by the Treasurer Karl Thaler and the various Commission heads, as well as running reports on the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Pre-Qualifiers, the club competitions of FIBA Europe, the Basketball Champions League (BCL) and 3x3.

The next Board meeting in March 2023 is scheduled to take place in Spain.
