FIBA celebrating women in basketball every day of the year

MIES (Switzerland) - International Women's Day 2024 provides the perfect opportunity for FIBA to showcase how it celebrates women in basketball every day through its activities and initiatives.

These are shaped and supported by the overarching FIBA strategic priority 'Women In Basketball' , which continues to contribute to the soaring popularity of female hoops around the globe.

This priority was also extended during 2023 for another four years, further highlighting its significance and importance for our sport.

With inspiring women in basketball at every level around the world, one of the most impactful initiatives using this to encourage more young girls to get involved is the  'Her World, Her Rules' grassroots initiative. With an excellent track record of success, it is now anticipated that this will deliver an even bigger impact in 2024

FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Global Ambassador Sue Bird said: "It's truly remarkable to witness the growth and influence of women in basketball, and today serves as a perfect opportunity to celebrate this progress. Initiatives like 'Her World Her Rules' are revolutionizing the game, alongside other groundbreaking programs from FIBA that break down barriers and create opportunities for girls and women at every stage of their basketball journey.

Let's harness this incredible momentum and build upon the strides we've already made as we continue to champion the advancement of girls and women in basketball worldwide.

Together, we can keep pushing forward, driving positive change, and ensuring that the sport's future is bright, inclusive, and empowering for all.

FIBA Foundation activities are currently celebrating Women's History month and throwing a spotlight on the variety of roles that women in basketball are playing. But it is the all-year-round mission of the Foundation to promote gender equality in their daily work and supporting projects that advocate gender equality that is truly making a difference.

Gender equality in commissions and working groups is also absolutely key for FIBA.  For the first time, three out of seven FIBA Commissions are Chaired by a woman, and in two of the other four Commissions, the Deputy Chair is a woman. Additionally, the Central Board has appointed three women to the FIBA Foundation Board for the first time.

FIBA Global Partner TCL has also joined in the celebrations, with Vice President of TCL Technology Wei Xue saying: "TCL is committed to working with FIBA to propel the growth of women in basketball, along with supporting the women's national basketball team in China - enhancing the game's popularity.

We are proud not only to celebrate this today on International Women's Day, but on every day of the year.

"The success of our Break & Believe campaign alongside FIBA's grassroots program, 'Her World, Her Rules', has been very rewarding. Looking ahead, we are excited about expanding these campaigns in the coming years, reinforcing our commitment to accelerating the women's game across the globe.

"#TCLforHer, which was showcased at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022, focuses on the empowerment and personal development of women worldwide, helping to create an inspirational ecosystem for women to encourage women."

Major strides continue forward with respect to female officials showing their skills in the biggest FIBA competitions. That was no more evident than last year when Amy Bonner, Blanca Burns and Jenna Reneau all officiated at the flagship FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. This also underlines the continual push being made by FIBA to support and develop more female referees at the elite level.

Referee Amy Bonner said: "International Women's Day represents a moment to reflect and honor those who had the courage to push through barriers, creating opportunities today.

We now own the responsibility to follow that course and pave the way for future generations to continue to have opportunities and success.

The official logo of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2025 has also been revealed today ahead of next year's flagship event. The launch of the logo coincides with International Women's Day in recognition of the stars of the sport that will be set to shine on the big stage and help inspire the next generation of female athletes.

And when it comes to women's competitions, the FIBA calendar continues to provide an exciting and evolving platform to shine - including in 3x3, where it was recently announced that the Women's Series will have a 20-stop season during 2024 with a prize pot of 1.4 million US dollars.
