Ex-European champion Egypt host and claim title at first FIBA AfroBasket alongside Syria

MIES (Switzerland) - Egypt have a storied legacy in African basketball and even hosted the first FIBA African Championship in 1962, known today as the FIBA AfroBasket - which is one of FIBA's 90 iconic moments. But the Pharaohs had already taken part in four FIBA EuroBaskets before that - including winning the title in 1949.

Egypt hosted the European competition in 1949 and collected their second medal following bronze in 1947. The country's final appearance in the European event came in 1953.

Cairo once again welcomed a major competition nine years later with five teams playing a round robin tournament - Ethiopia, Guinea, Morocco, Sudan and United Arab Republic (UAR), a political union formed in 1958 between Egypt and Syria.

United Arab Republic dominated play as they beat Ethiopia by 90 points, Guinea by 31, Sudan by 24 and Morocco by 23 to take first place and win the forerunner of today's FIBA AfroBasket.

Sudan claimed silver with just a single loss to UAR, while Morocco suffered two losses and claimed the third spot on the podium.

United Arab Republic went on to play two more AfroBaskets, winning the title in 1964 in Morocco and then 1970 in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. Egypt competed under the Egyptian flag starting in 1972 and captured two more continental titles on home soil among 13 podium finishes (five seconds and six thirds) in 14 competitions between 1972 and 2003.
