Big minutes early on for Teletovic, Bogdanovic

NEW YORK (NBA) - With so many international players now in the NBA, it's not surprising to see a handful on the court all at once.

But at one point in the fourth quarter of the Brooklyn Nets' 116-85 rout of the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday at the Barclays Center in New York, the home team didn't have a single player from the United States on the floor.

The five playing included Croatia's Bojan Bogdanovic, Russia's pair of Andrei Kirilenko and Sergey Karasev, Mexico's Jorge Gutierrez and Jamaica's Jerome Jordan.

Mirza Teletovic, the high-scoring forward from Bosnia and Herzegovina, wasn't among the five but had played almost 21 minutes, pouring in eight points.

The early indications are that Bogdanovic, 25, an all-tournament selection at EuroBasket 2013, and 29-year-old Teletovic, will see a lot of action under coach Lionel Hollins.

Teletovic is averaging 22 minutes per contest and has already had one big scoring game, a 20-point eruption in the team's season opener against the Boston Celtics.

The former Baskonia (Laboral Kutxa) star, now in his third NBA campaign, hit four of his six three-point attempts in that game and is eight of 17 (47 percent) from beyond the arc on the season.

Bogdanovic, an NBA rookie, is 25 years of age and hasn't been as productive.

Hollins is nevertheless playing the Croatian an average of 26 minutes.

Before the Thunder game, Bogdanovic revealed that Hollins had challenged him.

"He helps me a lot, especially in the practice, [telling] me to be more aggressive," he said.

The former Fenerbahce Ulker star then went out and had his best outing of the season on Monday against the Thunder, scoring 12 points.

Hollins, a former NBA guard himself, said earlier this season that Bogdanovic had yet to find a comfort zone.

"I think he's figuring out the American game," the coach said.

"He's also figuring out that three-point line is a little further away and he needs to take his time, use a little more legs in shooting it."

Teletovic had a feeling going into the season that it was going to be much better than his first two, especially in terms of opportunities.

He said to the local media back in his country: "Before there was no cohesive plan of action for me, [but] this time Hollins set up several lines of attack where I will have a major role, which means that I will have more space and greater responsibility."

The season is young and both players know they must produce to receive consistent minutes.

At least each is getting a chance, and the early indications are good for both.
