World Tour recap - International flavour for New York qualifiers

On 18-19 August, the FIBA 3x3 World Tour stopped in streetball’s spiritual home as New York City played host to 15 teams with the chance for four more to punch their ticket Miami.

If more than half the total field hailed from US cities, this World Tour stage provided solid proof of the international strength of 3x3 basketball.

Only one of four semi-finalists and Miami qualifiers hailed from the USA, as the unbeaten but always spectacular San Juan took on Moscow and Canadian snipers Edmonton faced Denver in the two Semis.

San Juan triumphed over Moscow 17-15 thanks in large part to the signature ankle-breaking moves of Jonathan Garcia Bermudez, great shooting from within and beyond the arc, quick hands on defense and spectacular, flashy dunks from William Orozco.

If Denver struggled throughout their game, they always managed to keep the score balanced.

After suffering a straight four point run from Edmonton with only two minutes on the clock, Denver's Derek Griffin hit two important shots from way beyond the three point line to tie the game and take it into overtime. Griffin immediately produced carbon copy to seal a 20-18 OT win.

Prior to the Final, Orlando’s Irwin Hudson had displayed great long-range accuracy to win the Soot-Out, while Cincinnati's Robbie Smythe was named best dunker after earning himself a perfect 10 score from a jury that included Knicks legend Larry Johnson.

But the best was kept for last as San and Denver delivered a heart-stopping final. The game was tied and overtime looming with just over a second on the clock as Denver's Corey Campbell dished his most lethal weapon, hitting a buzzer-beater from beyond the arc to defeat a heartbroken San Juan 19-17.
