Spain - Saéz gives Gallardón a reproduction of the medal from Japan

The mayor of Spain’s capital city received from the hands of the FEB president a reproduction of the gold medal conquered by Spain’s national basketball team at the world championship games. The event was held during the programmed activities of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) on February 2nd due to the commemoration of Madrid Day.

José Luis Sáez, FEB president, gave a warm tribute to the city of Madrid by giving the mayor of the city, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, a reproduction of the gold medal that the national basketball team won at the past world champiosnhip games in Japan. The capital of Spain is a city commited to sports in general and especially to basketball. Ruiz Gallardón was thankful for the medal and said that, “It’a an honor to receive the medal won at the world championship games; I assure everyone that it will have a place of honor at Madrid’s city hall.” Sáez expressed his satisfaction upon, “Holding a ceremony which represents the work well done by people at every level. These efforts led us to our triumph in Japan, and will make EuroBasket 2007 an organizational and athletic success this summer.”

The maginificent stand that the city hall of Madrid held at FITUR was the ideal setting of the tribute by the FEB to Spain’s capital. National team coach José Vicente “Pepu” Hernández, was also present and interested in the promotional activities at the world renown tourism fair in which EuroBasket 2007 had stands for every city where games will be played in the continental tournament.

The national select team felt warmth from their fans in Madrid during the preparatory games played in the last two summers at the Madrid Telefónica Arena, a facility which registered great attendance of fans who enjoyed the best basketball of national teams during the “ City of Madrid” international tournament. The games hosted top notch teams such as Argentina, Lithuania and Greece. What’s more, this great facility, which is property of the city of Madrid, will hold the second phase of the EuroBasket tournament from September 7th-12th
