PUR - Ramon Clemente answers S.O.S.

SAN JUAN (FIBA Americas Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - If the door closes to a player in a national team set-up because of an injury, it invariably opens for another.

Puerto Rico's Ramon Clemente now finds himself with an opportunity he never expected as the Boricuas prepare for the FIBA Americas Championship.

After withdrawals by David Huertas, Carlos Rivera and Denis Clemente, Puerto Rico invited Ramon Clemente to the training camp.

"I'm very excited," he said via his twitter account.

"I don't want to get too excited as it is only a test, but have me in your prayers and wish me luck. I definitely appreciate (the opportunity)."

Ramon Clemente has played professionally in Mexico and Israel.

His willingness to link up with the national side without hesitation has gone down well with the country's basketball federation.

"He is very happy and willing," Alfredo 'Piranha' Morales, the federation's director of operations, said in the Puerto Rican media.

"I liked his reaction. That is very positive.

"This week we are going to Florida and have eight days of two-a-day practice sessions.

"We need players and the coach leader (Paco Olmos) needs to evaluate players."

If Clemente isn't that well known, another Boricua that has now linked up with the national side for training, Carlos Arroyo, certainly is.

Arroyo, who just turned 33, is one of the leaders of the Boricuas.

He says there are some marked differences with the approach of Olmos, who has replaced Flor Melendez.

Arroyo says he thinks Olmos' system will benefit his style of play.

"It is a little slower, in a way, in the execution, as it was for me in Turkey (with Besiktas and more recently, Galatasaray)," Arroyo said.

"Paco has completely different characteristics to what we were used to.

"He has a more European mentality, a team game.

"It's a style that stresses fundamentals, one in which everyone touches the ball, everyone talks on defense and the offensive attacks are a little wider.

"When you run, you run. But it has a focus on defensive transition. And the game in the half court defense, run the right way, using 24 seconds, valuing the ball. I like that."

The FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas tips off on 30 August, and Puerto Rico are in Group A with Uruguay, Jamaica, Canada and Brazil.

The top four sides in the competition clinch places in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
