MEX - Trigueros tops in Mexican South Zone

CIUDAD OBREGON (Cibacopa) - Trigueros have taken sole leadership of the Cibacopa league South Zone in Mexico after four successive home wins.

The hosts began won 93-67 over Bucaneros on Friday and followed that up a day later with a 79-64 victory over Nogales-based Fuerza Guinda.

The team from Ciudad Obregon then claimed back-to-back wins over Frayles, starting with a 107-93 on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Maurice Riddick top-scored with 37 points and Ron Howard poured in 30 in a 118-111 Trigueros triumph as they improved to 23-5.

Last week, Caballeros shared the top of the South Zone lead but a 109-102 defeat to Vaqueros on Friday in Agua Prieta dropped them to second.

However, they bounced back with three victories to stay second.

On Saturday, the Culiacan team claimed a 92-88 win at Mineros and followed that up with a nailbiting 90-89 triumph over rock-bottom Paskolas on Tuesday.

Ryan Holmes netted 27 points one day later as they hammered the Cananea team 107-74, with Will Howard scoring 21 points in a losing cause.

Caballeros remain a point behind the leaders while Guasave-based Frayles are third, with 18 wins and 10 defeats.

In the North Zone, Vaqueros and Colorados share top spot - both level on 46 points - with 18-10 campaigns thus far.

On Saturday, Vaqueros lost 112-98 to Mazatlan-based Tiburones, who lie fourth in the South Zone on 16-12.

Thomas Mugabe was in superb form with 52 points and eight rebounds for Tiburones, while Trash Myles’ 34 points were in vain as Vaqueros lost their unbeaten home record after 13 games.

However, they bounced back by twice defeating El Calor of Mexicali, the first in controversial circumstances.

On Tuesday, El Calor won 88-86, but authorities decided to award Vaqueros the win after the inclusion of Timothy Pledger in the home team.

The American-born man was seated in the stands for the first quarter, but was introduced thereafter, netting 15 points.

However, according to the Cibacopa rules, foreign players who will be part of a game must be announced 24 hours before the tip-off and Pledger had not been, leaving the visitors with a 20-0 victory.

On Wednesday, Vaqueros won 91-84 with Jeff Agba`s 34 points leading the way.

The defeat for El Calor leaves them without any chances of making the play-offs.

Colorados claimed three wins in four games.

On Friday, the San Luis team beat Pioneros 119-107 and followed that up with a 119-110 triumph over Frayles.

On Tuesday and Wednesday they had mixed fortunes against Fuerza Guinda, winning the first 107-101 and losing the second, 113-98.
