The Kenya Wheelchair Basketball Federation (KWBF) has recently received funding from Pact, an international non-profit co-operation, for the second consecutive year to continue its work in developing sport for persons with a disability throughout Kenya. Previous funding allowed the establishment of five branches (Nyanza, Coast, Rift Valley, Central and Eastern) increasing the number of members to 151.

The latest project, which will receive over $50,000 in funding, aims to improve the performance of the five new provincial branches, to create awareness about Wheelchair Basketball and increase membership, to build the capacity of the KWBF leadership, to establish a permanent secretariat in Nairobi and to promote fundraising strategies/techniques of KWBF. Directly, the funding will allow the purchase of wheelchairs and balls, pay rent at available facilities to enable regular weekly practices, train and pay allowances for six coaches (one each for the new branches and one for Nairobi to coach the national men's and women's teams).

A series of friendly matches will take place with each of the branch clubs, which will be highly publicized and will receive live media coverage to help further create awareness about Wheelchair Basketball in the country. The KWBF aims to use this project to initiate a national league and subsequently form a strong national movement.

In November 2005, KWBF sent a National team to South Africa to participate in the Gold Cup qualifier tournament. During this time, two accompanying coaches received game skills training from experts in South Africa. Upon return, the two coaches held a five day coaching and classification training for six local coaches who are currently training the regional clubs.

To ensure the success of the project, the KWBF will collaborate with the Kenya National Sports Council, the National Paralympic Committee of Kenya, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation and the Kenya Sports Institute.
