IRI - Petrochimi clinch Super League glory

TEHRAN (Iran Superleague/FIBA Asia Championship) - These are exciting times for the Petrochimi basketball team in Iran.

For the first time, the club has captured the Super League title after an 88-74 victory over Mahram in a Game 5 decider of the play-off finals over the weekend.

Led by their national team players Hamed Sohrabnejad and Hamed Afagh, Petrochimi capped a terrific campaign.

Both players had 20 points in the championship-clinching triumph.

Sohrabnejad also led the winners with 12 rebounds.

"Hamed Sohrabnejad played like a real captain for us and won us the championship," Petrochimi point guard Sani Becirovic - whose father Memi is the coach of Mahram and also the boss of Iran's national team - told FIBA Asia.

"He (Sohrabnejad) was the real man of Final games."

A 2.06m forward, Sohrabnejad played for the Iran team that competed at the 2008 Olympics and also celebrated a gold-medal triumph with them the following year at the FIBA Asia Championship in China.

Afagh played for Iran's gold-medal winning sides at the 2007 and 2009 FIBA Asia Championships and also competed at the 2008 Olympics.

Sohrabnejad and Afagh each had four steals against Mahram, who got a game-high 27 points from their national team star Samad Bahrami.

"Mahram has a great roster and big players, but I believe my players were better on the court," Petrochimi coach Mehran Hatami told FIBA Asia.

"I'm satisfied with the way all my local and import players played and each of them contributed to the victory."

Petrochimi are hoping to use the triumph as a launch pad for bigger things.

They will be looking for success at the WABA Champions Cup and the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

As for Iran, their national team will try to return to the top of the podium at the FIBA Asia Championship in the Philippines this summer after coming in fifth at the 2011 tournament.

Hamed Sohrabnejad and Hamed Afagh are likely to feature in the national squad again as they attempt to qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
