GBR/LAT/GER/CUB – Brits to host friendly women’s tournament in May

LONDON (EuroBasket Women/FIBA Americas Championship for Women/2012 London Olympics) – EuroBasket Women-bound Great Britain will host Latvia, Germany and Cuba in friendly tournament next month.

The Brits and Latvians will use the event as a warm-up tournament for June’s EuroBasket in Poland while Cuba will be getting ready for the FIBA Americas Championship for Women in Chile.

The friendly tournament will be played at the Surrey Sports Park from May 18-21.

Great Britain coach Tom Maher said: "I couldn't be happier with the teams British Basketball has assembled to play in our tournament at Surrey Sports Park.

"Cuba is a traditional world basketball power and Latvia has a couple of players that are legitimate stars of the women's game.

"Furthermore, playing Germany gives us the opportunity to measure our progress from last year."

Britain played in the same EuroBasket Women qualifying group as Germany last summer and topped the pool.

Slovakia finished second and Germany missed out on a place at the EuroBasket in Poland.

Surrey Sports has hosted the GB women previously when they played two friendly games against Portugal and a EuroBasket qualifier versus Ukraine last summer.

Britain are going into this summer with one eye on the Olympics.

They were confirmed participants at the London Games by the FIBA Central Board last month.

Jo Leedham, a member of the British team, said: “I am excited to be back playing in Surrey and for us to be able to host our first four nation tournament.

"I think it is great for British Basketball to be able to host such an event, with some quality teams coming over to compete."
