FIBA Americas League - Alex fires Universo/BRB into Final Four

SUNCHALES (FIBA Americas League) - Flamengo blew a chance to play at the FIBA Americas League Final Four and let Brazilian rivals Universo/BRB advance instead on the last day of Group C play in Sunchales.

Despite beating both Universo/BRB and Deportes Castro, Flamengo failed to progress after falling 93-84 to Libertad.

That result, couple with Universo/BRB’s 87-85 triumph over Chilean outfit Deportes Castro left Libertad, Flamengo and Universo/BRB with 2-1 records.

Universo/BRB had a superior goal differential in the games involving Libertad and Flamengo.

They nearly missed out on the Final Four because in Friday's first game, Universo/BRB needed a three-ball from Brazil international Alex Garcia just three seconds from the end to defeat Deportes Castro (0-3).

Alex ended up with a game-high 30 points.

Flamengo still controlled their own destiny and would have advanced with a win but fell behind and messed up their big opportunity.

They trailed by 23 points (67-44) with three minutes to go in the third quarter.

With Libertad needing to post a win of 35 points or more to have a superior goal differential and reach the Final Four, the Group C hosts incredibly looked as if they might pull off the feat.

Flamengo didn’t allow them to pull away, though, and closed the fourth quarter on a 14-2 run.

In Libertad's victory, Willie Farley scored 25 points, Jason Osborne 19, Alejandro Zilli and Sebastián Ginóbili 11 each.

Universo/BRB joined fellow Brazilians Minas Tenis and Bigua of Uruguay as the teams that have booked Final Four spots.

Group D will be played from January 20-22 in Xalapa, Mexico, and will involve Halcones UV Xalapa and Soles de Mexicali of the host nation, Argentinians Quimsa and Costa Ricans COOPENAE Liceo.

The FIBA Americas League Final Four will take place February 6-8.
