ESP - Tau progress despite setback

VILNIUS (Euroleague) - Tau Ceramica have reached the Euroleague quarter-final play-offs despite going down 65-63 at Lietuvos Rytas.

The hosts needed to win by at least a seven-point margin to maintain their Group F hopes and looked to be on course, but Travis Hansen rescued the visitors by scoring 12 of his 17 points in the final quarter to cut a 10-point deficit to two.

Hansen was ably assisted by Luis Scola's 15 points, while Matthew Nielsen was the only Lietuvos Rytas player to net double figures with 10.

Already assured of their place in the last eight, CSKA Moscow clinched top spot in the group to guaranteed home advantage in the play-offs.

Matjaz Smodis led a real team display with 13 points in their 76-64 victory over GHP Bamberg, who were far too reliant on the 23 points of Derrick Phelps and the 21 of Demond Mallet.

Group G is still very much wide open after Panathinaikos won 66-56 at Efes Pilsen and Benetton Treviso downed Cibona 88-80.

Greek side Panathinaikos ran out comfortable winners in the end in Istanbul thanks to 14 points apiece from Konstantinos Tsartsaris and Jaka Lakovic.

Antonio Granger's 20 points proved in vain for their Turkish opponents.

The result leaves both sides with a 2-3 win-loss record, while Benetton and Cibona both have 3-2 records.

Marcus Goree led Italian outfit Benetton to victory on Wednesday with 19 points, supported by Drew Nicholas' 18.

Next week's final fixtures could see a four-way tie in the group.
