CHN - China women see off Australia to complete sweep

BEIJING (2011 FIBA Asia Championship for Women) - China’s women’s national team completed a 3-0 sweep of their opponents in the four-nation Qi Yi Cup by beating Australia 80-72 on the final day of the tournament.

China had earlier defeated New Zealand (77-70) and Brazil (71-53).

Up-and-coming forward Ding Yuan led the hosts with 14 points while veteran Ma ZhengYu added a dozen points and Ji Yanyan had 10.

Abby Bishop led all players with 16 points for Australia, while Elyse Penaluna chipped in with 13.

Another youngster, Zhao Shuang (pictured), was the star in China's first two wins.

Against Brazil, the 20-year-old Shenyang Golden Lions forward had 17 points and nine rebounds as China took a firm grip on the proceedings right from the word go.

A day earlier, Zhao had 11 of her 18 points in the first half to help China stay in charge against New Zealand.

China used the tournament as a part of their preparations for the FIBA Asia Championship for Women to be held in Omura, Japan from 21 to 28 August.

There, the Chinese will defend the gold medal they won in Chennai, India, two years ago.

China will compete with hosts Japan, traditional rivals Korea, fellow East Asian powerhouse Chinese Taipei, India and Lebanon in the elite Level I of the competition.
