AUS - Opals announce training camp squad

MELBOURNE (Olympics) - Bulleen Boomers standout Rachel Jarry is among the 20 players invited to the Australian Opals training camp next month ahead of the London Games.

The 20-year-old forward is a contender to fill the void left by Fenerbahce's Penny Taylor, who suffered a serious knee injury during the EuroLeague Women Final Eight three weeks ago in Istanbul.

Taylor was the MVP of the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women.

Jarry had a strong season in the Australian league (WNBL), averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.

While she has yet to make her debut for the Opals, she did play for the Aussies at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Another intriguing player headed for the camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) 14 May is Hanna Zavecz, a 1.83m guard/forward who impressed this season for Sopron in the EuroLeague Women.

The 26-year-old played in 11 games for the Hungarian side, averaging 8.2 points and 4.5 rebounds.

Jenna O'Hea and Kathleen MacLeod were leaders in the Dandenong Rangers outfit that captured this season's WNBL title and have been invited to camp.

The 24-year-old O'Hea played for the Aussies at the FIBA 2010 World Championship while MacLeod hasn't been in the side since 2007, when she helped the Opals win the FIBA Oceania Championship.

Recently-crowned EuroLeague Women champion Lauren Jackson of Ros Casares and long-time point guard Kristi Harrower are included, along with 20-year-old center Liz Cambage of Bulleen - the country's leading player at the World Championship two years ago.

The camp at the AIS will run until 18 May.

Australia May training camp squad: Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Liz Cambage, Rohanee Cox, Cayla Francis, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Natalie Hurst, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O'Hea, Erin Phillips, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, Kristen Veal, Carly Wilson and Hanna Zavecz.
