ARG – Scola: ‘We can win without Manu’

BUENOS AIRES (2010 FIBA World Championship) – While an entire international basketball community waits for the big announcement in the United States on which players will travel to Turkey in a bid to win the FIBA World Championship for the first time since 1994, everyone knows which stars of number one ranked Argentina will be aiming for the podium.

The biggest and brightest of them all, Luis Scola, says anything is possible for his national team in Turkey.

And that’s even without San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, the man Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez recently called the “best FIBA player” in the game.

“We can play well without Manu,” Scola said.

“I'm convinced.

“Manu is a better player than we realize, but basketball is a team sport.

“You can play just as well if anyone is missing.”

Ginobili decided not to play this summer in order to spend time with his newborn twins, Dante & Nicola.

“We have guys who were behind Manu and will have to take a step forward, like Carlitos (Delfino) and Paolo (Quinteros),” Scola said.

“Some teams have played better without their star players.”

Indeed, Argentina have already shown they can win without Ginobili.

At the Olympics in China, Ginobili left the court in the first half of Semi-Final against the United States with an injury and played no further part in the tournament.

Delfino, Quinteros and Leandro Gutierrez ate up most of Ginobili’s minutes and helped the country win the bronze medal.

Scola will this summer lead Argentina when they compete in Group A in Kayseri against Serbia, Australia, Germany, Angola and Jordan.

While the USA will not have Dwyane Wade and could end up having to do without Olympic champions LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Scola knows the Americans will still have a star-studded roster.

"The teams will be just as powerful,” he said.

“The U.S. has plenty reinforcements and Spain can win without (Pau) Gasol and we can be champions without Manu.”
