USA – Augustus looks likely for USA return

USA (WNBA) - Seimone Augustus was among the last two cuts by USA Basketball before the Americans travelled to the Czech Republic and won the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women.

If she remains healthy, it's hard to see Augustus not returning to the side for the London Games.

After leading the Minnesota Lynx with 36 points in a 101-95 Game 2 triumph over Atlanta in the WNBA Finals, Augustus had a team-high 16 in Friday's Game 3 as her side completed a sweep and celebrated their first league title.

The 27-year-old shooting guard/small forward ended up averaging 24.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists in the series.

The performance capped a terrific comeback for the former Louisiana State University star, who tore her ACL during the 2009 campaign.

She then had to have abdominal surgery to remove fibroids before the start of the 2010 season.

Doctors performed a hysterectomy at the same time.

The fitness issue was no doubt a major factor for Augustus, a gold-medal winner with the United States at the Beijing Olympics, missing out on the trip with the Americans to Ostrava and Karlovy Vary last year where they went unbeaten and captured the world title to qualify for the London Games.

Asked if she had reached her peak after claiming the MVP gong, Augustus smiled and said: "No, I think I'm getting there.

"I haven't hit my peak yet, I'm just now I feel like coming out of my shell ..."

After taking a break, Augustus will travel to Europe to play for Sparta&K Moscow Region Vidnoje in Russia's top flight and the EuroLeague Women.
