PUR - Quebradillas take first place, Ayuso makes debut

QUEBRADILLAS (BSN) - Piratas de Quebradillas stand alone in first place with a 6-2 record after defeating Cangrejeros de Santurce 93-90 on Tuesday night.

Quebradillas boast the best home record after improving to 5-0 with the win, in which Peter John Ramos had 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Dee Brown (pictured) added 20 and David Huertas 18 for the winners.

The game was tightly contested from start to finish as Quebradillas led 25-24 at the end of the first quarter and 42-41 at halftime.

The hosts stayed aggressive but Santurce caught up to them with their points off turnovers and second chance opportunities.

With the game tied at 51 midway through the third quarter, a technical was called on Walter Hodge and Huertas took advantage of it by scoring nine points in a row, starting with four free throws, to put Quebradillas' up 60-51.

The home side led 69-65 heading into the fourth quarter.

Santurce though fought back and a 6-0 run courtesy of a Ricky Sanchez long bomb and a three-point play by Michael Sweetney gave them a 90-89 lead with two minutes left to play.

But Brown made a basket and Huertas hit two free-throws for the win.

Sweetney had 27 points and Wilfredo Pagan added 23 for Santurce who are in last place with a 2-6 mark.

Meanwhile, Larry Ayuso made his season debut by scoring 19 points and help Capitanes de Arecibo snap a three-game losing streak with a 77-59 rout of Caciques de Humacao.

Ayuso missed the first seven games of the season after he was suspended for leaving the national team prior to the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

Mets de Guaynabo won against Maratonistas de Coamo 92-85 and are tied for third with a 5-3 record.
