Are Semi-Finals bound USA simply unstoppable?

SYDNEY (Australia) - The USA marched into the Semi-Finals of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup after easing past European champions Serbia 88-55 to move to within just two wins of an 11th crown.

While Serbia did a good job of slowing USA down in the first-half, even having their share of the lead at times after a positive opening, the USA machine ultimately proved to be an unstoppable force.

There were quite a number of Serbia fans at the Sydney SuperDome supporting their team against the defending champions, but it could not help their team as USA started gaining traction.

"Honestly, I didn’t hear them. I think at this point you expect a lot of teams to have more fans than us, but we do what we do and we play our game."

- Alyssa Thomas

USA shifted up the gears to ensure that they protected their proud record of having never lost a Quarter-Finals matchup since they were introduced almost 30 years ago.

"Serbia really tested us," said Kelsey Plum. "They played super physical, more physical than we’ve played against the whole tournament, credit to them. I felt early on their pressure bothered us a little bit but we kinda got under control, and the second quarter we held them to single digits which is our identity and what we want to be going forward in this tournament."

Alyssa Thomas had another outstanding all-around contribution and got to within touching distance of a triple-double after adding 13 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists - as well as snapping up 3 steals.

A'Ja Wilson also came up big inside with 15 points and 8 boards for the reigning champions, who once again showed that they show few signs of weakness and it will take something special to stop them, USA will now face either Canada or Puerto Rico in an All-Americas Semi-Finals clash.

Meanwhile Serbia exit the tournament with a 3-3 record and reflecting on an encouraging tournament. Yvonne Anderson (14 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds) was particularly exceptional throughout, showing leadership at vital times to lead a fierce team in transition that can now return to Belgrade with their heads held high.
