Anticipation builds with FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup tip-off two years away

SYDNEY (Australia) - There is already anticipation and excitement ahead of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 in Australia with today marking two years before the start of the event.

Twelve teams will be in the field at the 19th edition of the tournament, with games to be played at two venues in the Sydney Olympic Park from September 22 until October 1.

Organizers are already hard at work getting ready for the biggest basketball event to be staged in the city since 2000, when the Sydney Olympics were held.

The CEO of the Local Organizing Committee, Melissa King, said: "The 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup will set a new benchmark for the event both on and off the court, while creating a long-term legacy for women's basketball in the region."

While Australia, who captured their only title in the competition 14 years ago in Brazil and will be in the upcoming tournament as the host nation, the other 11 teams will be determined at four FIBA Qualifying Tournaments held in February 2022.

Australia last put on the Women's World Cup in 1994, an event that fueled interest in the sport Down Under.

Basketball Australia CEO, Jerril Rechter said: "It's our vision that hosting the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup will continue to build upon the high performance and participation legacy the 1994 event was a catalyst for, while presenting an unprecedented opportunity to drive the expansion of women's basketball both here and abroad, and reinforcing Australia as a global leader in women's sport."
