BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The FIBA Regional Office - Asia recently organized a Sports Performance Specialist (SPS) workshop in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 8-9 April 2023.

The goal of the workshop was to provide basketball coaches, athletes, and interested parties with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their athletic abilities and prevent injuries. The SPS program is part of FIBA's larger initiative to bolster the physical training capabilities of local coaches and promote strength and conditioning in basketball.

Participants were actively engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions, making the workshop a resounding success.

“The emphasis on theoretical and practical classes was placed on basic skills and programs for the physical training of basketball players,” said Mikhail Lonshakov, one of the participants of the workshop. “The practical part included a variety of exercises, including technique, jump, warm-up, and dynamic stretching.”

“The exercises were not only for professional players but also for children, suitable for the development of young basketball players. This was the first level, so the program included basic things that many coaches already knew.”

“However, it was interesting to remember and systematize all of this, also during the theoretical classes, each coach could choose for himself one of the many varieties of programs.”

“I think that everyone who came to the seminar received the necessary basic level of knowledge, remembered something, and learned about something for the first time. I think that everyone liked it and that such seminars should be held regularly.”

“The practical exercises were the most interesting for me,” said another workshop participant, Anton Ponomarev. “It clearly demonstrated how to conduct them. I want to express my gratitude to everyone involved for making this happen.”

This workshop is part of a broader effort to establish a foundation of physical training through education and raise the standard of strength and conditioning coaches in basketball.

Anton Kirin, another participant, added: “Everything was great, I appreciate this opportunity to see how to plan more effective training sessions. Thanks to everyone who was involved in organizing this seminar!”

The success of the SPS programs is a testament to the Regional Office’s dedication to empowering local coaches and promoting strength and conditioning in basketball. With previous successful programs held in Lebanon, PalestineQatarMaldivesSyriaMongoliaIraq, Singapore, KuwaitTurkmenistanIranSaudi Arabia, Thailand, and Malaysia, the Regional Office continues to lay the foundation of physical training through education to elevate the standard of strength and conditioning coaches in basketball.
