At just 18, towering phenom Zhang Ziyu is making everyone take notice.

SHENZHEN (China) - Standing an imposing 220cm/7’3”, Zhang Ziyu made a memorable first impression on opening day of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2025, marking her debut for China’s senior team with a commanding presence.

After starring for China’s U18 squad at the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup 2024, where she earned MVP honors, Zhang took the next step in her rapidly rising career during China’s dominant 110-59 victory over Indonesia on Day 1.

In under 12 minutes of play, the 18-year-old phenom contributed 13 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, showcasing her ability to impact the game even with limited minutes.

Head coach Gong Luming praised Zhang’s unique talents but emphasized the journey ahead.

"She just had her 18th birthday last month, and we made some adjustments for her because of that," he said. "This is also her first Women’s Asia Cup tournament with the seniors, so she has had to rise up to this challenge, too.

"She has a very special talent, and she gives tons of pressure to the opponents" Gong said. "However, she still needs to polish some areas. Zhang Ziyu has a long way to go."

Opponents took notice as well. Indonesia’s debuting player, Bella Hasan, reflected on the challenge of facing Zhang.

"I just heard the stadium got really loud. I see one really tall girl (Han Xu) and then I see another one, the really tall one (Zhang), and she’s even younger than me," Hasan said. "It was an interesting experience."

Zhang’s own teammates are equally excited about her potential.

"She is very young but very famous now. She is very good," said Han Xu, the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2023 MVP. "If we go on the court together, I will pass the ball very high to her. I am very excited to play with her for China."

Veteran playmaker Wang Siyu added, "Zhang Ziyu is a very talented player for us. She has a big impact on the game, and I believe for this tournament, she will do a great job for us."

As China defends their title on home soil, Zhang debut signals the arrival of yet another budding star ready to carry their legacy forward. With her towering stature and growing skill set, Zhang is poised to become a cornerstone of China’s basketball future, blending raw potential with the guidance of experienced veterans.
