Veteran voice guides Australia back to the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Final

SHENZHEN (China) – At 193cm/6’4", Cayla George towers not just physically but as a beacon of experience and leadership for the Australian Opals at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup. Returning for her second Asia Cup appearance after playing in 2019, George has been instrumental in Australia’s landmark return to the final—the team’s first appearance in the Women’s Asia Cup final since 2017.

With averages of 10.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, ranking among the rebounding leaders across the tournament, George’s presence on both ends of the court has been invaluable. But beyond stats, it is her role as a mentor and steadying influence that has defined her impact.

"Yeah, it feels really good to be back. Anytime I get to wear the green and gold, it’s really special," George said, reflecting on her career filled with multiple World Cups, Olympics, and Commonwealth Games. "I love being around this group. Although it’s a bit of a different looking group from Paris last year, our goal and the Opal style of play remain very similar. I’m the oldest by a few years, so I’m using my experience from previous Asia Cups and international tournaments to help get us over the line."

Coach Paul Goriss highlighted George’s pivotal role after Australia’s Semi-Finals victory over Korea, ensuring a podium finish, saying, "Cayla’s experience just shone through for us in a game like this."

Teammates appreciate her mentorship too. Isabelle Bourne, part of the new generation, said, "It’s been fun and exciting to learn from teammates like Cayla, who’s guiding us. She’s a true leader on and off the court."

"Cayla is an unbelieveable leader," added Stephanie Reid. "She is a really good teammate and does every little thing that contributes to a win. She is so invaluable to this group, and I am so glad we have her on our side."

George’s approach balances hard work with enjoyment. "We Aussies work hard but like to have fun in the process. Enjoying what we do and working for each other ultimately gets us through to our goals. We hope to win it. That’s really important coming into the World Cup next year."

As Australia’s veteran forward continues to lead with skill and heart, Cayla George symbolizes the spirit of the Opals: a mix of tradition, resilience and the promise of future glory. With her at the helm, Australia are poised to write the next chapter of their storied basketball history at the Asia Cup and beyond.
