Because for the first time ever, the state-of-the-art facility will be hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, with Qatar welcoming China to open their Second Round campaign on August 27.

That game against the only 16-time FIBA Asia Cup champions will be another solid gauge to assess where the team of Coach Hakan Demir is at, although it won't just be about what will transpire on the hardwood.
It shall also provide a compelling early glimpse of the tournament experience, offering fans and observers a chance to feel the excitement of the global event one year before the 20th World Cup tips off.
That's because the Al Janoub Arena will serve as one of the 4 locations confirmed to host next year's prestigious showcase, along with the Al Attiyah Arena, Duhail Arena, and the renowned Lusail Multi-Purpose Hall.

It became possible as the venue - inaugurated in 2019 - was transformed into an enclosed, dedicated basketball arena with a seating capacity of 8,200, which is expected to be packed for the aforementioned tiff.
The stadium was designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, drawing inspiration from the traditional dhow boats which reflects the country's deep maritime heritage through its flowing lines and distinctive form.
And its conversion from being a football stadium to a potential hoops haven underscores Qatar's willingness to innovate and try things out for the betterment of sport, and the overall experience of everybody involved.
