Svitek handed coaching reins of Czech Republic

PRAGUE (FIBA EuroBasket Women 2019 Qualifiers) - Stefan Svitek will be at the helm of Czech Republic when the FIBA EuroBasket Women 2019 Qualifiers tip off in November after being given the task of rebuilding the hosts of the 2017 edition.

They endured a miserable time on home soil this year under his predecessor Ivan Benes, who will remain as an Assistant Coach and work alongside Svitek.

Czech Republic were eliminated during the initial group phase of the tournament after losing their opener against Ukraine and suffering what proved to be a catastrophic defeat to Hungary - a team that was coached by Svitek and a result that enhanced his reputation.

Czech Republic's hopes went up in smoke after barely 24 hours at Final Round

That cemented the decision of the Czech Basketball Federation to go for Svitek who will also coach Aluinvent Miskolc in EuroCup Women this season.

"We have been watching Stefan Svitek for a long time," said Federation Chairman, Zdenek Briza. "A lot of us know him as an excellent player and we really enjoyed the coaching of the Hungarian team at EuroBasket Women. So, we approached him and signed the contract for the next EuroBasket Women. He was the first and only candidate for us."

Svitek will lead Czech Republic into a Qualifiers group that includes Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, who finished in a historic Third-Place in Prague.

His first game will be on the road in Germany on November 11 and then a return to the Czech capital for a match-up with Switzerland.
