Russia go with Lange as new head coach

MOSCOW (FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2019 Qualifiers) - Russia have opted to hand UMMC Ekaterinburg play-caller Olaf Lange the task of guiding them to the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2019.

He's jumped into the hot-seat for November's Qualifiers and takes over from Alexander Vasin. His predecessor was fired in the wake of Russia's surprise failure earlier this year, when they did not make the Quarter-Finals at FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017.

Lange will know his squad well after spending the past five seasons coaching in the Russian Premier League with UMMC, where he has also won two EuroLeague Women titles.

The German has recent international experience from his time as an assistant coach for Australia at the 2017 FIBA Women's Asia Cup - although the favorites were left stunned by Japan in the Final.

Russia have been drawn in Group C and will face Albania, Hungary and Lithuania.
