Latvia stifle Japan and cruise to victory in opener

BELGRADE (2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments) – Latvia were superb on the defensive end during long stretches on Monday and cruised past Japan 88-48 in the opener of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade.

Turning Point: Dairis Bertans knocked down his second three-pointer of the night and followed up with a steal at half-court and a dunk to put Latvia ahead 10-6 with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter. The European side never looked back, stretching the gap to 20 points already in the second stanza.

Stats Don't Lie: Latvia moved the ball well, created open looks and shot an excellent 13-of-16 (81%) from two-point range during the first half. Japan meanwhile shot only 26% from the floor during the two opening quarters and were left with a mountain to climb.

Game Hero: Bertans scored 12 of Latvia's first 14 points on 6-for-8 from the floor to help his team get into rhythm. The sharp-shooting guard finished with 20 points in 18 minutes of play and added four assists.

The Bottom Line: Latvia are going into their Tuesday clash against the Czech Republic knowing that a victory would guarantee them top spot in Group B. Japan face the Czechs on Wednesday and need to win if they are to avoid early exit from the OQT in Belgrade.
