Brantlova believes in home support

LONDON (2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - As the last non-American to lift the coveted silverware at the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship, Tereza Brantlova is well placed to know about the importance of home support.

It's now some 14 years since the USA weren't stood triumphantly on the top step of the podium.

Back in 2001 in Brno, it was Brantlova and her Czech Republic team-mates who finished as champions - most notably winning the title on home soil.

With this year's hosts Russia being tipped to mount a challenge in Chekhov and Vidnoe, home comfort could be vital according to Brantlova.

"While we felt a bit of pressure on us in the beginning, it helped us to stay focused on every step we had to take," she recalled.

"We didn't want to disappoint people and when getting further in the Championship, the support became stronger and stronger - we could feel it all around us.

"It was something we had never experienced before and we were left thrilled by it as it became a huge part of our success.

“The energy of the crowed helped us to reach the highest target during the biggest games. - Brantlova

"It was also great to be able to share every successful step with your family and friends - I don't think it would have been possible to have won the title had we played some-where else."

"It may have been 14 years ago, but I still get goosebumps when I think about it. Not only because of the trophy, but also because of the incredible atmosphere in the gym.

"The Czech nation stood up and were a sixth player on the court - it was incredible.

"To beat the American 'dream team' with Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter in the Semi-Finals took some-thing extra and we had to leave our heart and soul on the court," continued Brantlova.

"We then beat Russia when down by six points with only 50 seconds remaining.

"I was honored to be a captain and as well as being named the best three-point shooter in the tournament, I will never forget the moment of lifting the trophy above my head in front of my team and listening to the song 'We are the Champions!'"

Brantlova, who now splits her time between playing for Barking Abbey Crusaders in the Women's British Basketball League (WBBL) and modelling in London, played in a team which contained the likes of Jana Vesela and also one of the legends of the Czech game.

"Eva Viteckova was an exceptional player and is an exceptional person as well," smiled Brantlova.

"I have always had a big respect to her for her honesty, attitude and modesty.

"At that Championship she was named MVP and it was only the beginning of her successful career.

"She became a great role model for young Czech players and inspired many kids to start to playing this beautiful sport.

"Now as she has retired, I can only wish her all the best and thank her for all she has done for Czech Basketball."

The 2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championships tips-off on Saturday, 18 July.
