Step up to the mic! FIBA names winner of 'She Calls Game'

MIES (Switzerland) - After receiving applications from 26 countries from around the world and whittling the field down over three stages, a group of judges has selected the winner of She Calls Game.

Australian Julia Montesano, a sports journalism graduate at La Trobe University in Melbourne with experience producing content for several platforms and having been given the opportunity to call live games in a play-by-play capacity, will now be one of the voices of international basketball.

During the tryout, Montesano and other candidates were tasked with the challenge of putting their voices on highlights and live action.

"It's been such a big goal of mine for so long to commentate at an international level, I didn't even think I'd reach this pinnacle at a domestic level, so to get this opportunity has been absolutely amazing," she said.

"I loved going through the process of it as well, to be up against so many amazing women."

Montesano will now be at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 in Sydney to commentate. The 12-team event will be staged from September 22 to October 1.

Once on the mic and calling games, this is what we can expect.

"I just want to showcase my personality and be myself," Montesano said, "and really let the players do the speaking because this tournament is all about them and showcasing their talent."

At the recent draw in Sydney for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis spoke about Women in Basketball, which is one of FIBA's strategic priorities for 2019-2023, and mentioned the importance of having female voices on the mic.

"FIBA places high priority on increasing the role of women at all levels in our sport and providing more opportunities, both on and off the court. We want more women playing basketball, more women coaching, refereeing, managing the sport, and commentating the sport," Zagklis said.

She Calls Game, therefore, was a perfect fit.

"I thought this goal was so out of reach for people like myself," Montesano said. "I think FIBA is taking great steps with this initiative."
