MIES (Switzerland) - Opals legendary point guard Michele Timms will perform the Draw of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 on March 3 in Sydney, Australia.
The FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 Draw will take place at 19:00 local time in Sydney, Australia, (9:00 AM CET), with the results determining which of the two groups of the Women's World Cup 2022 each of the twelve teams will compete in.
Based on the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike, and for the purpose of the draw, the twelve teams in the competition will be divided in two pots:
Teams competing in this year's World Cup, tipping off September 22, will be Australia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Serbia and USA.
Following FIBA's decision on Russian teams, the draw will feature a team "To Be Determined" (TBD), which will be drawn without geographical restriction. The Central Board will determine in due course the team from the Washington/Santo Domingo Qualifying Tournament that will participate in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.
Four teams from each of the two groups will advance to the Quarter-Finals and the Final phase.
Here is an explanation of the Draw Principles.
Legendary hosts
FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 Event Ambassador Lauren Jackson will be on stage for this much-anticipated event, with Michele Timms to perform the draw.
Timms made 264 appearances as a point guard for Australia, playing at four World Cups (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998). She was an anchor for the Opals team that grew into an international basketball powerhouse, playing a leading role for the national team that finished on the podium in third place in 1998 in Berlin, Germany.
Timms' excellence also helped the Opals take center stage at the Olympics. She was the floor general as Australia captured a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games and then, as captain, led the team to the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Final in Sydney.
Timms was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2016.
Timms, revered Down Under for her tenacity and uncompromising spirit on the hardwood, helped lay the blueprint for the Opal's success. Her legacy is still vivid today.
